BRAHMS String Quartet No 1 in C minor
DVOŘÁK String Quintet No 2 in G

Brahms laboured long and hard over the string quartet as a genre, finally coming up with a work that pleased him after many attempts, the dramatic and intense String Quartet No 1. Unusually, Dvořák dispensed with a second viola in his String Quintet Op 77, adding a double bass instead. He entered the work in a chamber music competition, no doubt hoping to impress the judges with the breadth and versatility of his writing. The strategy paid off – he won!

Brahms Chamber Music concerts supported by Dave Davey and Annick Ansselin
